More Men Seek Plastic Surgery

Every year more than 800,000 men have a plastic surgery procedure done and the number is growing. But the bodies, goals and temperament of men are different from those of women. Men are impatient with long recovery periods, and often seek plastic surgery to remain professionally competitive. Facelift and rhinoplasty procedures that work well on women tend to feminize men, who need techniques that will ensure a masculine look with less recovery time.

7 Things Men Should Know About Plastic Surgery

1. Liposuction can remove love-handles that even gym rats can’t shed; it is also excellent for removing fatty breast tissue and giving men back the abs they had in college.

2. Liposuction can remove localized fat deposits that the gym can’t touch.

3. Results from liposuction will be best if men continue regular workouts at the gym after the procedure.

4. When men do go for facelifts, their thicker skin means they need a unique procedure — less pulling of the skin itself, which tends to become overly thin when pulled, and more work tightening the deeper tissues of the face.

5.  Men often have more resilient skin than women, so it tends to shrink better following the procedure. This allows for more fat removal in some men during liposuction.

6. Calf implants and pectoral implants tend to migrate with time and have other problems. Better to use liposuction to sculpt the surrounding areas, and make the pecs and calves appear more distinct.

7. A chemical peel, which can be done without general anesthetic, is not a “facial” and can get rid of fine lines and blotchiness that make sportsmen look older than their years.

A Facelift May Live More Than Ten Years Longer

A Mayo Clinic study suggests that women who have a facelift may live more than ten years longer than those not having a lift. The study was presented at a meeting in New York sponsored by the 1900-member American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). The meeting showcased research by young plastic surgeons in accredited residency or fellowship programs.

The study involved 250 female patients who had facelifts from 1975 to 1980. The average age at the time of surgery was 60.4 years. Death from any cause was treated as the end point, and survival was compared graphically and statistically with life tables for the female United States population.

“Obviously, this interesting analysis does not claim to prove a cause-and-effect relationship between having a facelift and living longer,” says Mark Jewell, MD, chair of ASAPS Communications. “However, other studies have shown that patients who have a facelift generally have a greater-than-average commitment to maintaining their overall health and fitness. That can easily translate into living longer.”

The study’s authors, Lane F. Smith, MD, and Stephan J. Finical, MD, say that enhanced “self-esteem and life optimism,” proven benefits of cosmetic surgery, may also contribute to longevity.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) is the leading organization of plastic surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) who specialize in cosmetic surgery of the face and the entire body.

Hair Loss – Can We Change The Plans of Our DNA?

Our genes are responsible for determining our eye color, skin type and yes, our predisposition to hair loss. However, the gene responsible for hair loss has “variable expression”. This means that even if the gene was passed to you by your parents, you may not experience premature hair thinning and loss. A number of factors work together to either contribute to the problem, or to prevent it from worsening.

These factors include your diet, the level of stress in your everyday life and your lifestyle including habits such as smoking cigarettes and exercise. However, the most important factor is a chemical called DHT. Dihydrotesterone is a by-product of testosterone, which is why men are more often affected with hair loss than women.

Men who are predisposed to early hair loss by their genetics will find the problem compounded if they are also sensitive to DHT. The chemical causes the hair follicles to shrink, effectively choking off the hair shaft and causing thin and eventually disappear. The hair follicles on the top and sides of the scalp are most likely to be affected by this type of baldness.

Solutions and Treatment

While it is not possible to “fix” or change the gene responsible for hair loss, it is possible to treat the problem and prevent it from worsening. There are several medications available to help combat the symptoms of hair loss.

Rogaine is a medication applied to the scalp twice a day. The active ingredient is a medication called Minoxidil. It works by stimulating hair growth and is effective in 50-55% of the people who use it. Rogaine is available over the counter.

Propecia, or finasteride, is a prescription drug that lowers the body’s levels of DHT. This prevents the shrinkage of the hair follicles that causes hair to thin and eventually stop growing.

Some men opt for surgery to treat their thinning hairline. Specialists can remove the part of the scalp affected by hair loss and pull the areas thick with hair over to cover the bald spots. If that seems too drastic for some, hair plugs are also an option.

Older Women Getting Breast Surgery

Studies show that more and more older women are undergoing breast augmentation surgery to get an extra lift.

According to reports, breast surgery was the most popular operation to have in America last year and one-third of the patients who went under the knife were 40 and older.

Why the Increase in Procedures?

Doctors claim that some women who get the surgery have lost weight due to other procedures such as bariatric surgery.

The recent marketing of the “mommy makeover” and natural aging also are contributing factors to the increasing number of older women who are having the surgery.

“The aging and childbearing take their toll on you,” says Dena Scott, a mother of two who recently had the procedure. “You start losing tissue.”

Patients Most Likely to Undergo Surgery

Dr. Walter Erhardt, the previous president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons claims that the majority of patients who are undergoing breast surgery are married women with children.

“These women don’t approach this so much as cosmetic surgery but as reconstructive surgery,” Erhardt explains.

Many, like Scott, are in their 40’s when they decide to go under the knife.

Researchers believe this is due to the fact that by this time the kids are most likely out of the house, or at least out of grade school, so the cost isn’t an issue.

Myths and Misperceptions of Breast Implant Surgery

Surprisingly, it’s shape over size for Canadian women considering breast implant surgery

(NC)-Despite common perceptions of the motivations for women seeking breast implant surgery, the results from a recent survey, The Canadian Women’s Attitudes toward breast implant surgery, demonstrate that what matters most to Canadian women is achieving a natural shape for their breasts, rather than a larger size. In fact, nearly 73 per cent of women surveyed who are considering breast augmentation, are considering the surgery to make their bodies look more natural or normal.

“It may be surprising to many Canadians what the main motivators are for women seeking breast implant surgery,” says Dr. Mitch Brown, a plastic surgeon based in Toronto, Ontario. “For a vast number of my patients, this surgery was definitely not just about augmenting breast size, but rather achieving a shape and size that can help them look natural, renew their femininity and feel more comfortable in their clothes.”

The survey also demonstrates that an open dialogue between surgeons and patients is important and increased awareness and understanding about breast implant surgery is needed.

Highlights from the survey include:

. While 65% of women surveyed are satisfied with their current breast size, only 48% are satisfied with their breast shape;

. When asked to select a body part she would like changed, 41% of women would change their breasts (second only to stomach at 72%);

. Of the women wanting to have breast implants, 59% cited attaining a more natural or normal look to their bodies;

These results were based on a survey of more than 1,000 women from across Canada to assess their attitudes and perceptions towards breast implants.

Haven’t had botox? Then you’re not ‘in’

In a modern society where everything seems to be about being pretty, sexy and looking good physically, it is no wonder that a social stigma once associated with cosmetic surgery is now a thing of the past.

In fact, veteran cosmetic surgeon Dr. Corazon Collantes-Jose, president of Philippine Society for Cosmetic Surgery, said nowadays you are considered not “in” if you haven’t had a botox or a facelift.

“It’s the other way around. If they have the money, everybody would like to undergo [cosmetic surgery],” Jose said.

Popular among Asians are liposuction, facelift, botox, breast augmentation, nose lift and double eyelid operation, according to Jose. For Caucasians, on the other hand, she said they usually go for liposuction and breast augmentation or reduction.

Due to cosmetic surgery, 50-year-old females now look like they are still in their 30s. They are confident and they feel good about themselves after every surgery, Jose added.

“Once they become pretty, their character changes, their mood changes… They don’t feel jealous anymore and they don’t complain that much because they’re pretty… The negative becomes positive,” she said.

Tummy Tucks for Men?

Women aren’t the only ones who care about their bodies. Though men are less open about it they, too, want to look and feel their best. Most men develop loose skin after a significant weight loss or gastric bypass surgery. Aging, too, can cause the skin to lose its elasticity, and result in sagging skin.

Tummy tuck surgery, formally known as abdominoplasty, can be performed as a full, partial or extended abdominoplasty. The closer you are to your ideal weight, the better results you can expect.

A full tummy tuck involves incisions from the pubic area up to each hip, and vertically to, and around the belly button. The skin flaps are separated from the muscle, and then the muscle connective tissue is sutured to bring it closer together, flattening and tightening the muscles. Liposuction may be done at this point if there is excess fat. The skin flaps are then pulled snugly to fit the abdomen, trimmed to fit around the navel and to remove excess skin, and sutured. Lastly, drains are placed to reduce fluid buildup, and will remain in place for a few weeks, until swelling goes down and healing is nearly complete. Surgery can take up to five hours, and is done under general anesthesia.

Partial tummy tuck is similar to its full counterpart, but involves only the abdominal area below the level of the navel. The incision above the pubic bone is shorter, not extending all the way to the hip, and there is no need for the vertical incision, as the skin above the navel will not be displaced. The procedure is similar-liposuction may be done if there is excessive fat, and the lower abdominal muscles tightened by suturing. The skin is pulled down and trimmed off, then sutured closed. Drains are needed to reduce fluid buildup, which remain in place until swelling begins to resolve. Surgery takes about two hours, and is done, usually, under general anesthesia. ASPS has animated both procedures to give you a better understanding.

An extended tummy tuck reaches beyond the abdomen to the sides, above the hip, to remove those precious love handles. The incision extends beyond the hip, and an additional procedure, liposuction, can be done to remove excess fat. Aside from including an area that extends to the sides of the abdomen, the procedure is not much different from a full-abdominoplasty.

Breast Augmentation – Not Just for Models

While some people still assume that anyone seeking to enlarge her breasts is just “looking for attention,” this kneejerk stereotyping is unfair. In reality, there are as many reasons for undergoing breast augmentation as there are women who desire one.

How a woman feels about her breasts can have a profound impact on her self-image and self-confidence. If she feels embarrassed or self-conscious because her breasts are small, uneven, or have a shape she’s not happy with, it can cause her to avoid certain social situations or affect her ability to enjoy intimacy. If increasing the size of your breasts or pursuing a breast augmentation procedure to make your breasts “match” will help you feel more comfortable in a swimsuit or wearing a fancy party dress, then you might want to speak to a qualified plastic surgeon about your options.

In other cases, a woman might wish to have a breast augmentation because of changes in her breasts due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, or rapid weight loss. Any of these life events can drastically alter the size, shape, and resilience of the breasts, leaving them with sag, lack of volume, or no longer proportional to the rest of your body. A breast augmentation can restore the youthful look of your breasts. In these cases, often a breast lift is also necessary to correct the loss of tone.

In even more extreme situations, a breast augmentation procedure can be used to reconstruct one or both breasts after a mastectomy or even a severe injury. In this case, a  breast augmentation can go a long way toward helping a woman regain her feminine identity and sense of self in the face of a drastic challenge in her life.

Whatever the reason you choose to pursue a breast augmentation, it’s very important to consider what results you wish to achieve, and how they are best accomplished. A consultation with a plastic surgeon can help you determine the best way to reach these goals.
