Society more open than ever about cosmetic surgery
Consumer survey results indicate ‘having work done’ not taboo anymore
Chicago – Cosmetic surgery is everywhere these days: TV, magazines, Internet and more. And according to new data, society is indeed more comfortable talking about cosmetic surgery than ever before.
In a survey released today by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, 71 percent of respondents think society is less judgmental about cosmetic surgery than it was just five years ago. Furthermore, about 62 percent said society’s attitude toward cosmetic surgery made them feel more comfortable about getting a procedure.

“This is a confirmation of what many of us have felt for a long time – that cosmetic surgery has become mainstream,” said Dr. Mark Berman, AACS President-Elect. “A variety of factors have contributed to the normalization of our industry, but the bottom line is that people are not afraid to talk openly about cosmetic surgery anymore.”
According to the survey, the most accepted invasive procedures are breast augmentation (42.4%), facelift (32.2%) and tummy tuck (32.1%). Among non-invasive procedures, the most accepted are laser hair removal (61.9%) and Botox (61.6%). Additionally, 52 percent of respondents said they would tell family about having invasive cosmetic surgery.

About 20 percent said they would consider getting cosmetic surgery in the future, while about 22 percent were unsure if they would. Respondents under the age of 40 were nearly twice as likely to consider having a procedure in the future.
“It’s been a long road but thanks to the hard work of so many, cosmetic surgery is rightfully gaining acceptance in our society,” said Dr. Patrick McMenamin, AACS President. “We’ve reached a point where people are no longer quiet about having a cosmetic procedure and that is important to all of us.”

Older Women Getting Breast Surgery
Studies show that more and more older women are undergoing breast augmentation surgery to get an extra lift.
According to reports, breast surgery was the most popular operation to have in America last year and one-third of the patients who went under the knife were 40 and older.
Why the Increase in Procedures?
Doctors claim that some women who get the surgery have lost weight due to other procedures such as bariatric surgery.
The recent marketing of the “mommy makeover” and natural aging also are contributing factors to the increasing number of older women who are having the surgery.
“The aging and childbearing take their toll on you,” says Dena Scott, a mother of two who recently had the procedure. “You start losing tissue.”
Patients Most Likely to Undergo Surgery
Dr. Walter Erhardt, the previous president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons claims that the majority of patients who are undergoing breast surgery are married women with children.
“These women don’t approach this so much as cosmetic surgery but as reconstructive surgery,” Erhardt explains.
Many, like Scott, are in their 40’s when they decide to go under the knife.
Researchers believe this is due to the fact that by this time the kids are most likely out of the house, or at least out of grade school, so the cost isn’t an issue.

Myths and Misperceptions of Breast Implant Surgery
Surprisingly, it’s shape over size for Canadian women considering breast implant surgery
(NC)-Despite common perceptions of the motivations for women seeking breast implant surgery, the results from a recent survey, The Canadian Women’s Attitudes toward breast implant surgery, demonstrate that what matters most to Canadian women is achieving a natural shape for their breasts, rather than a larger size. In fact, nearly 73 per cent of women surveyed who are considering breast augmentation, are considering the surgery to make their bodies look more natural or normal.
“It may be surprising to many Canadians what the main motivators are for women seeking breast implant surgery,” says Dr. Mitch Brown, a plastic surgeon based in Toronto, Ontario. “For a vast number of my patients, this surgery was definitely not just about augmenting breast size, but rather achieving a shape and size that can help them look natural, renew their femininity and feel more comfortable in their clothes.”
The survey also demonstrates that an open dialogue between surgeons and patients is important and increased awareness and understanding about breast implant surgery is needed.
Highlights from the survey include:
. While 65% of women surveyed are satisfied with their current breast size, only 48% are satisfied with their breast shape;
. When asked to select a body part she would like changed, 41% of women would change their breasts (second only to stomach at 72%);
. Of the women wanting to have breast implants, 59% cited attaining a more natural or normal look to their bodies;
These results were based on a survey of more than 1,000 women from across Canada to assess their attitudes and perceptions towards breast implants.

Breast Augmentation – Not Just for Models
While some people still assume that anyone seeking to enlarge her breasts is just “looking for attention,” this kneejerk stereotyping is unfair. In reality, there are as many reasons for undergoing breast augmentation as there are women who desire one.
How a woman feels about her breasts can have a profound impact on her self-image and self-confidence. If she feels embarrassed or self-conscious because her breasts are small, uneven, or have a shape she’s not happy with, it can cause her to avoid certain social situations or affect her ability to enjoy intimacy. If increasing the size of your breasts or pursuing a breast augmentation procedure to make your breasts “match” will help you feel more comfortable in a swimsuit or wearing a fancy party dress, then you might want to speak to a qualified plastic surgeon about your options.
In other cases, a woman might wish to have a breast augmentation because of changes in her breasts due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, or rapid weight loss. Any of these life events can drastically alter the size, shape, and resilience of the breasts, leaving them with sag, lack of volume, or no longer proportional to the rest of your body. A breast augmentation can restore the youthful look of your breasts. In these cases, often a breast lift is also necessary to correct the loss of tone.
In even more extreme situations, a breast augmentation procedure can be used to reconstruct one or both breasts after a mastectomy or even a severe injury. In this case, a breast augmentation can go a long way toward helping a woman regain her feminine identity and sense of self in the face of a drastic challenge in her life.
Whatever the reason you choose to pursue a breast augmentation, it’s very important to consider what results you wish to achieve, and how they are best accomplished. A consultation with a plastic surgeon can help you determine the best way to reach these goals.

Some Patients Stop Needing Antidepressant Medication After Having Plastic Surgery
It has been proven that plastic surgery can improve self-esteem, but can it also act as a natural mood enhancer? A significant number of patients stopped taking antidepressant medication after undergoing plastic surgery, according to a study presented at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
“Plastic surgery patients are taking a proactive approach in making themselves happier by improving something that has truly bothered them,” said Bruce Freedman, MD, ASPS Member Surgeon and study author. “While we are not saying that cosmetic plastic surgery alone is responsible for the drop in patients needing antidepressants, it surely is an important factor.”
In the study, 362 patients had cosmetic plastic surgery — 17 percent or 61 patients were taking antidepressants. Six months after surgery, however, that number decreased 31 percent, down to 42 patients. In addition, 98 percent of patients said cosmetic plastic surgery had markedly improved their self-esteem.
All of the patients, who were primarily middle-aged women, had an invasive cosmetic plastic surgery procedure such as breast augmentation, tummy tuck or facelift. The authors did not identify any other major life changes that may have affected patients’ use of antidepressants.
“We have just begun to uncover the various physical and psychological benefits of plastic surgery,” said Dr. Freedman. “By helping our patients take control over something they were unhappy about, we helped remove a self-imposed barrier and ultimately improved their self-esteem.”

Breast Procedures Leave Women Extremely Satisfied
99% Would Have Surgery Again, Says Study Presented at ASPS Annual Meeting
Chicago – Breast augmentation, breast lift, combination lift/augmentation and breast reduction achieve high satisfaction rates; enhance self-esteem and quality of life; and 99 percent of women would have their surgery again, according to a first-of-its-kind study presented at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) Plastic Surgery 2008 conference, Oct. 31 – Nov. 5, in Chicago. The study found breast lift and lift/augmentation to have a high level of patient satisfaction that rivals breast augmentation and reduction.
“Many studies have shown breast augmentation and breast reduction are highly gratifying procedures for women, but until now we’ve had limited information on patient satisfaction for breast lift or combination lift/ augmentation. This data fills in the gap,” said Eric Swanson, MD, ASPS Member Surgeon and study author. “When the vertical technique is used in the augmentation/lift procedure, patient satisfaction is high.”
In this prospective study, 325 patients were interviewed about their breast procedures over a five year period, with a response rate of 81 percent. Almost all patients, 99 percent, would have their procedure again and 91 percent of patients reported improved self-esteem. Overall, patient satisfaction was 96 percent. The average result rating was 9.2 out of 10. According to Dr. Swanson, the high patient satisfaction rates for breast lifts and reductions in the study applied only to the vertical technique, which was used on all patients.
The study also evaluated preferred breast shape, discomfort level, and recovery. Most women preferred a convex breast shape, i.e., fuller contour at the top of the breast.
“Naturally, breasts are fuller towards the bottom, but our study found patients want more fullness on top, which is hardly surprising in view of the purpose of bras,” said Dr. Swanson.
Patients reported using prescription analgesics an average of 5.4 days, resumed driving in 5.8 days, returned to work in 7.5 days, and felt “back to normal” in 27.8 days. Pain rating was moderate overall, 5.4 out of 10, higher for breast augmentation (5.9) and lower for breast reduction (3.3).
Nearly 348,000 women had breast augmentations in 2007, making it the number one cosmetic plastic surgery procedure performed last year, according to ASPS statistics. In addition, more than 106,000 women had breast reductions and 104,000 women had breast lifts last year.
