Information about Chin Surgery Procedure

A balanced facial appearance depends partly on the shape and size of your chin in relationship to your nose. Chin surgery can reduce (mentoplasty) or augment (genioplasty) the chin to give your face a more balanced appearance.

The procedure

The incision is made in one of the next possible locations:

1- Under the lower lip inside the mouth
2- Under the chin in an inconspicuous location

In order to reshape or reduce the bone, creating a harmonic appearance, the surgeon works in the area with appropriate electrical instruments, carefully chosen. The incision is sutured and stitched, and then  a tape is applied in the chin area.

Anesthesia: The procedure may be performed under local anesthesia (sedated, numbed, and awake). Only in some cases, General anesthesia is required.

Length: Between 30 minutes and one hour.

Hospitalization: Patients usually return home within hours of the procedure. Some patients require an overnight stay.

After the surgery

Is possible experience considerable swelling or discoloration in the treated area, which diminish in several weeks. The stitches are typically removed seven days after the procedure.

It is recommendable to follow post-operative instruction list to help reduce the risk of complications. There may be some pain, which can be managed with oral medications. The surgeon may have recommendations to reduce swelling, such as elevating your head.

Returning to Normal Routine

Normal activities can be resumed typically within seven days.

What are the possible side-effects and complications?

The practice of medicine and surgery is not an exact science. Although this operation doesn’t have practically any type of side-effects some of the risks and potential complications that can occur are infection, fluid accumulation, changes in skin sensation, skin discoloration and/or swelling, etc
