Porcelain crowns are long lasting covers that simulate the anatomy of the tooth to give a better appearance. There are 2 types: the metal-porcelain crown and zirconium or alumina porcelain crown. The difference is that the ceramic composite based on zirconium or alumina is a harder core than metal and is white.

Function and Esthetics

• Replace teeth without touching the natural tooth (because of cavities, trauma, endodontic teeth)

Porcelain crowns are contraindicated in patients with:

• Gingivitis
• Excessive tooth mobility

Procedure

In a first session the aspect of the patient's mouth is studied by taking impressions. Then the dentist begins to reduce the teeth in height (under anesthesia) so the crowns are parallel and to remove cavities, stains, and defective enamel and a temporary crown is placed. Once the porcelain crowns are designed, after 7 days, if the porcelain crown fits perfectly they are permanently cemented.

After the Treatment

Porcelain crowns are long-term pieces as long as they are properly fitted and the dentist's indications are followed. They are harder and stronger than the teeth themselves.
