Breast Augmentation in Argentina

Augmentation Mammoplasty is an specific term for breast augmentation, breast enhancement or breast enlargement. This breast surgery involves placing silicone or saline breast implants in a certain part of the area involved: behind the breast tissue or under the chest muscle to increase size or improve shape of the breast. Breast augmentation can be performed in order to make smaller breasts seem to be larger, renovate the balance of breasts that are asymmetrical, or restore fullness that has decreased due to age or because of pregnancy.

Young women under the age of 18 are generally considered not to be good candidates for breast implants because the breasts continue to develop on into the early twenties.

The Procedure

To begin the procedure, it is made an incision in one of four main locations:

  • The crease of the breast (inframammary incision)
  • The perimeter of the areola_ (peri-areolar incision)
  • The arm pit (transaxillary incision)
  • The navel area (trans-umbilical or TUBA incision)

A discreet incision placement is one of the most important priorities in breast implant placement surgery. Although scars can fade significantly over time, they never completely disappear. Thus, the place of the incision is decided on a case-by-case basis, according to the individual anatomy and the preferences of the patient.

After the incision, the surgeon forms a pocket where the implant can be inserted. There are two main positions for implant placement:

  • Sub-glandular or above the pectoral muscles implant placement (positioning of the implant in front of the chest muscle and directly behind the breast tissue)
  • Sub-muscular implant placement (positioning of the implant under the pectoral muscle)

Some surgeons advise placing the implant in front of the pectoral muscle during surgery because this method tends to lessen postoperative pain and discomfort. Other specialists recommend placing the implant under the pectoral muscle in order to avoid interference with future mammograms.

Once the implant has been placed, the incision is cautiously sutured. If stitches used are the traditional variety, they are removed in one or two weeks, if are absorbable, they dissolved on their own in the same term.

In some cases, the surgeon places drainage tubes to minimize swelling and bruising. If drainage tubes are used, they are removed within a few days.

After the Surgery

The breasts will be bruised, sore and swollen after operation. The patient is expect to wear a special surgical bra for some days. There may be some moderate pain, but that can be managed by a medicine prescription from the plastic surgeon. The surgeon may advice to wear an support or sport bra until the swelling has subsided.

The nipples sensation might be reduced for the time being, but it should return to normal as the breasts heal.

It is extremely important to keep the area around the stitches clean. Avoid submerging your incision site in water and do not let dirt or products come in contact with the area. You should also avoid any strenuous activity, lifting, or stretching that could pull the sutures. This will prolong healing time and make your scar more noticeable.

After healing, some permanent scarring will remain. Scars are usually small and not noticeable.

Returning to Normal Routine

Heavy lifting or straining should be avoided after surgery because this can cause the breasts to swell and increase pressure. You can typically return to work within a week and to full activity within a few weeks.

The practice of medicine and surgery is not an exact science. Although there potentially may be complications with breast implants, they do not impair breast health. Some of the risks and potential complications that can occur are infection, skin discoloration and/or swelling, changes in nipple or breast sensation, capsular contracture and implant leakage or rupture.

The size of the breasts is enhanced by the procedure; two breasts with different size can be balanced; it restores the aspect of the breasts that lost their previous appearance due to aging or pregnancy

This procedure doesn't solve asymmetries in the position of the areolas/nipples nor lift hanging breasts. These two problems can be solved with a Mastopexy.

Breast implants do not cause any inconvenience to get pregnant or breastfeed since they had not demonstrated consequences, neither to the mother or baby. This is regardless of whether they are placed in front of or behind the pectoral muscle.

Despite some alarms over 20 years ago, is scientifically proven that the implants do not trigger this type of illness and there is no confirmed relationship with autoimmune diseases.

This is seen from aesthetic criteria and will be better or worse according to the characteristics of each patient and the surgeon's criteria.

Implants only provide volume; they do not lift nor hold. For breast lifting (mastopexy) we must use techniques for this purpose, and if we also want to increase we will add a prosthesis.

Anatomically, in general, the breasts are located outside of the sternum. Therefore there must be a 2 or 3 cm between them. Usually we used as a parameter the distance between the midline and the nipple. This must be between 8 and 10 cm, according to the width of the chest and texture.

Basically implants add volume. The form will depend on the pre-existing form. In general, the anatomic "tear drop"are used for cases of total breast reconstruction post-mastectomy.

The prosthesis does not have "due date" but over time they wear out as the same prosthesis. For this reason, manufacturers recommend changing them every 10 or 15 years. After that time, if they are in good condition and there have not been major aesthetics changes, you can proceed without problems. There are no definitive prosthesis but there are different qualities.

They can break or encapsulated for many reasons. However does not imply an alarm condition or disease. The current prosthesis have evolved in its production, stronger outer layers and filled with cohesive gel. If this situation occurs, does not constitute an emergency and a replacement should be scheduled.

Usually, the type of anesthesia will depend on the surgeon criteria and anesthesia team. The anesthesia should be adapted to the type of procedure to be performed. It is important to be operated in a clinic with appropriate authorizations, with appropriate technology and infrastructure and trained professionals.

Currently the most commonly used are the textured surface breast implants, as it is found to have less chance of capsular contracture. However, some surgeons still use smooth-surface when placed behind the muscle.

The breast augmentation surgery is performed in the morning and you usually are discharged in the afternoon. You have to rest for 3 days and then you can do daily activities but you cannot practice sports or sun tanning for 30 days. You will need to use a special bra and stay in Argentina for at least 7 days for a close monitoring.

Yes, the medical tests that you will need to have done are blood test, urine test, electrocardiogram (ECG / EKG) and a mammography.

To perform a breast augmentation surgery you have to wait 2 months after you stop breastfeeding. If you have never breastfed your baby, it wouldn't be necessary to wait this time.

Breast augmentation by lipofilling (fat transplantation) is still in the experimental stage. One of the main problems is that the fat can produce calcifications that looked like breast cancer on mammograms. Nowadays, the only method to increase the volume of the breast is with silicone implants.
