The main objective of a breast lift or mastopexy is to lift sagging breasts and provide them a better shape. Often patients wish to have the size of their breasts reduced, you may visit the section of our site devoted to breast reduction.

The Procedure

The first step in a breast lift surgery is to make a small incision. After that, the prosthesis is inserted between the gland and the breast plate and in some cases (delicate skin and no gland) slithered under the pectoral muscle. The most common breast lift procedure involves an anchor-shaped incision around the natural contour of the breast.

The incision describes the area where breast skin will be removed and defines where the nipple will be located. After removing the excess skin, the nipple and areola are moved to the higher position. In order to reshape the breast, the skin surrounding the areola is then brought down and together. Most of the times, stitches are located around the areola, in a vertical line extending downwards from the nipple area, and along the lower crease of the breast. There is another procedure called "doughnut (or concentric) mastopexy," in which circular incisions are made around the areola, and a doughnut-shaped area of skin is removed. The candidates for this type of procedures are especially those with relatively small breasts and minimal sagging.

If you are planning to have an implant inserted along with your breast lift, it can be placed in a pocket directly under the breast tissue, or deeper, under the muscle of the chest wall.

After the Surgery

• During the following two days after your breast lift, you will experience swelling, bruising, numbness, discomfort and temporary soreness in the chest area. These symptoms will disappear after some days.
• You will probably feel, during the first 15 days, temporary pain whenever you tend to move your arms as your breast will be still fragile and sore.
• At least 3 months will be required to be accustomed to the presence of the implant and be able to resume to normal activities such as exercising, breast feeding and pregnancy.
• Clinical and X ray tests of the breast need to be sustained annually.

Returning to Normal Routine

Getting back to work will take at least 1 week and for more strenuous activities you will need 1 month.

What are the possible side-effects and complications of mastopexy?

The practice of medicine and surgery is not an exact science. Although this operation doesn't have practically any type of side-effects some of the risks and potential complications that can occur are infection, fluid accumulation, changes in nipple or breast sensation, skin discoloration and/or swelling, etc. Breast lift surgery does not normally interfere with pregnancy, but if you are planning to have a baby, your breast skin may stretch and offset the results of mastopexy and you may have more difficulty breastfeeding after this operation.

What can be expected from a breast lift surgery?

Your breasts will look supple and natural and the natural sensitivity to stimulation of breasts will not fall.

What can NOT be expected?

Even though it will make your body look more beautiful and harmonious, and it will probably also improve your self-esteem, it will may not be enough to make you look perfect. We must be realistic and accept that that kind of perfection does not exist.
