Arlington Heights, Ill. – A “body sculpting” technique using high-intensity focused ultrasound to eliminate unwanted abdominal fat effectively reduces waist circumference, with only minor pain and side effects, reports a study in the July issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
Body sculpting is defined as “the optimization of the smoothness, definition, or silhouette of the human physique, particularly the torso.” The most common medical procedure for body sculpting is liposuction, which can remove relatively large volumes of fat. High-intensity ultrasound provides a nonsurgical alternative to liposuction for removing unwanted fat in nonobese patients, according to the study led by ASPS Member Mark L. Jewell, MD of Oregon Health Science University, Eugene.

Body Sculpting Technique Eliminates Fat with Few Side Effects
The researchers evaluated the outcomes of high-intensity focused ultrasound for body sculpting of the abdomen and flanks in 180 patients. All patients sought treatment to eliminate excess abdominal fat; only patients who were not obese (body mass index less than 30) were eligible for the study. The average age was 42 years, and 85 percent of the patients were women.

2010 Top Five Male Plastic Surgery Procedures
Statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show that more men are going under the knife. Overall cosmetic plastic surgery procedures in men were up 2 percent in 2010 compared to 2009. However, many male surgical procedures increased significantly. Facelifts for men rose 14 percent in 2010 while male liposuction increased 7 percent.
2010 ASPS statistics show that men underwent more than 1.1 million cosmetic procedures, both minimally-invasive and surgical. The majority of the Men’s Top 10 fastest-growing cosmetic procedures are surgical, which bucks the previous trend of growth in minimally-invasive treatments.
“The growth in cosmetic surgical procedures for men may be a product of our aging baby boomers who are now ready to have plastic surgery,” said ASPS President Phillip Haeck, MD. “Minimally-invasive procedures such as Botox® and soft tissue fillers work to a point. However, as you age and gravity takes over, surgical procedures that lift the skin are necessary in order to show significant improvement.”

Vaser Lipo Creators Introduces Vaser Shape Mc1
Sublimis Argentina offers affordable Vaser Liposuction Abroad
Louisville, CO – Sound Surgical Technologies, a leading manufacturer and distributor of ultrasonic body contouring technologies, announced the launch of VASER Shape MC1, a non-invasive ultrasound and massage system. Most well-known for the VASER Lipo® System, Sound Surgical Technologies has expanded its product line to include both minimally invasive devices for aesthetic body contouring and non-invasive systems to smooth and shape the body by temporarily reducing the appearance of cellulite and increasing local blood circulation.
“The VASER Lipo System has revolutionized the way surgeons approach fat removal, and we’re excited to add an effective non-invasive tool to the VASER product line,” said Daniel S. Goldberger, CEO of Sound Surgical Technologies.
VASER Shape MC1 received FDA clearance in May 2010 for relief of minor muscle aches, pain and muscle spasms, temporary improvement in local blood circulation, and temporary reduction in the appearance of cellulite. VASER Shape can be used alone or in combination with surgical body contouring procedures to minimize postoperative pain and swelling. The VASER Shape MC1 device is derived from a technology known as MedContour™ outside of the US, which has been used by hundreds of physicians to achieve excellent results.
“This new technology is the perfect complement for existing body contouring and liposuction procedures,” said Dr. Paul Zieg, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon at Zieg Plastic Surgery Center in Henderson, KY. “The VASER Shape MC1 System allows physicians to target specific problem areas for maximum results, while leaving the surrounding tissues unaffected.”
The VASER Shape MC1 technology was designed to allow physicians to tailor each treatment to the needs of the patient. Multiple handpieces provide a combination of ultrasonic diathermy (the application of high-frequency sound waves for local heat therapy) and zonal lymphatic massage. Physicians can also choose between multiple program settings that allow for a gentle postoperative session or more aggressive therapy for non-surgical results.
“VASER Shape is an excellent non-invasive option for patients who do not want a surgical procedure,” said Dr. Michael Nagy, F.A.C.S., Personal Enhancement Center in Toms River, New Jersey. “Most patients undergo a regimen of 4 to 5 total treatments, and many notice an improvement after just a single session.”

Popularity of cosmetic surgery growing among American minorities
American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery survey indicates Asian, Hispanic cultures comfortable with procedures
Chicago – In a survey released by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, more than half of respondents said they think the popularity of cosmetic surgery has grown among members of their racial/ethnic group in the last five years.
Among racial/ethnic groups, Asians reported that cosmetic surgery is most popular (31.4 percent of respondents). They were followed by Hispanics (27.4 percent) and African-Americans (18.8 percent) in cosmetic surgery popularity. About one quarter of respondents surveyed indicated they knew someone of the same racial/ethnic background who has gotten cosmetic surgery.
“Cosmetic surgery is en vogue no matter who you are,” said Mark Berman, MD, President of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. “Feeling better about yourself and making improvements to your looks is thankfully not limited to a specific race or culture.”
For invasive cosmetic surgery procedures, the most common surgery for Asian respondents is a facelift. Among black respondents, the top procedure is liposuction. And for Hispanic respondents, the most popular procedure is abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). More than 30 percent of respondents said they would seek out a cosmetic surgeon of the same race/ethnicity as themselves. And over half of respondents (56.6 percent) said it would be difficult to find a surgeon of the same race/ethnicity as themselves.

Argentina, among the most important centers for plastic surgery
- Worldwide Plastic Surgery Statistics Available for the First Time
- Non Surgical Procedures Outpace Surgical Procedures
New York – The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) is a world leader in plastic surgery. After a year-long process, the Society has produced the “ISAPS Biennial Global Survey(TM)” of plastic surgeons and procedures in the top 25 countries and regions – representing 75% of all procedures in 2009. The ISAPS Survey marks the first time reliable international plastic surgery data has been obtained and analyzed by independent statistical specialists.
“This year marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of ISAPS,” noted Foad Nahai, MD of the United States and current President of ISAPS. “The Society was founded at the United Nations by a group of concerned and proactive plastic surgeons. We could think of no better way of commemorating this important milestone than by commissioning and releasing this breakthrough Survey.”
Geographic Trends
The ISAPS Global Survey revealed a new hierarchy of countries with the most surgical and non surgical cosmetic procedures. While the United States continues its dominance in the field, countries not always associated with plastic surgery are emerging as major centers.
The top 25 countries and regions are:
1. United States
2. China
3. Brazil
4. India
5. Mexico
6. Japan
7. South Korea
8. Germany
9. Turkey
10. Spain
11. Argentina
12. Russia
13. Italy
14. France
15. Canada
16. Taiwan
17. United Kingdom
18. Colombia
19. Greece
20. Thailand
21. Australia
22. Venezuela
23. Saudi Arabia
24. Netherlands
25. Portugal

Most Popular Surgical and Non Surgical Procedures
For the last ten years, the consensus has been that breast augmentation was the most popular plastic surgery procedure. The ISAPS Global Survey reveals a new trend with liposuction representing 18.8% of all surgical procedures, followed by breast augmentation at 17%, and blepharoplasty (upper or lower eyelid lift) at 13.5%, rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) at 9.4% and abdominoplasty (“Tummy Tuck”) at 7.3%.
The popularity of surgical procedures varied by country with Brazil, the United States, China, Mexico, India and Japan the dominant countries for the top five procedures.
Reflecting both advances in cosmetic surgery innovation and the desirability of less expensive treatments, the number of non surgical procedures performed by plastic surgeons actually topped surgical procedures. While there is no previous baseline of information against which to compare these figures, there can be no doubt that this is a dramatic turn of events.
The top five non surgical procedures are: toxins or neuromodulators injections (Botox, Dysport) (32.7%), hyaluronic acid injections (20.1%), laser hair removal (13.1%), autologous fat injections (taking a patient’s fat from one location and transferring it in the same patient in another location) (5.9%) and IP Laser treatment (4.4%).
The countries where non surgical procedures were performed were dominated by the United States, Brazil, Mexico and China and to a lesser extent by Japan, Hungary, South Korea, India and Germany.

Liposuction Turns 20
The evolution of liposuction will be discussed by leading experts at the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), being held at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Convention Center May 2-7, 2009. “Liposuction 20 Years Later: Precision in Shaping, Prevention and Correction of Contour Irregularities”
In the early 1970s, “suction-assisted lipectomy” (SAL), or lipoplasty (liposuction), first appeared in the peer-reviewed literature. Originally used to remove lipomas (fatty tumors) and fatty deposits in various reconstructive procedures, the procedure was soon found to have a much wider application as a cosmetic surgery technique. In 1989, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified suction lipoplasty systems for use in aesthetic body contouring.
Since that time, the demand for liposuction has grown significantly and, according to ASAPS statistics, it was the second most popular surgical cosmetic procedure in 2008, with 341,144 procedures performed. With such popularity, however, comes greater responsibility to patients in terms of safety and cosmetic outcomes.
The panel will discuss liposuction technologies that have appeared over the years, including ultrasound-assisted, laser-assisted, power-assisted, and VASER®-assisted liposuction methods, the POLICE (Pre & Post Liposuction Contour Equalization) technique, fat grafting for the correction of deformities, and others.
In addition, which technologies yield the best outcomes will be debated. Some plastic surgeons feel that the best liposuction results are obtained without the use of the latest technologies – particularly those technologies that aim to thermally or otherwise damage fat cells.
There is more to successful body contouring than advanced technology or surgical technique. An understanding of aesthetic body proportions can mean the difference between a svelte, womanly figure and a “boxy”, man-like appearance. And thorough documentation and analysis of deformities, for example – particularly through the patient’s perspective via refined photographic techniques – is instrumental in ensuring predictable and pleasing results.
Whatever advances lie ahead and debates that remain, it is important to note that, just as when the first lipoplasty systems for aesthetic contouring were approved twenty years ago, today’s lipoplasty technology is still secondary to the skill of the surgeon. Every surgery has risks, but selecting a qualified, board-certified plastic surgeon helps to ensure both patient safety and satisfaction.
