The hymen is a fibrous and elastic membrane that covers the entrance to the vagina. When the hymen breaks slight bleeding occurs, usually as result of the first sexual intercourse (loss of virginity). The hymenoplasty also known as hymenotomy or hymenorrhaphy is a vaginal surgery use for hymen reconstruction.
Vaginal rejuvenation procedures can be done to women of any age who want to take care of their body and feel more beautiful. Currently, women are seeking for a hymenotomy for religious, cultural or ethnic reasons. The hymen may also break by placing a tampon, trauma, horseback riding or biking among others.
In a hymenoplasty the remains of the broken hymen are reconstructed with fine sutures which are absorbed over the time. If the remains of the hymen are insufficient, a small section of the vaginal wall is cut to be rebuilt. It is a simple procedure and is performed on an outpatient basis.
The recovery time for a hymen reconstruction surgery is from 4 to 6 weeks. After the hymenotomy a little bleeding is common during the first 72 hours. The level of inflammation is minimal and you don't need to worry about the stitches since absorbent threads are used that will fall on their own or can be reabsorbed.
During the recovery time you should not have sexual intercourse or insert objects such as tampons or vaginal ovules.
